Convenience Store News In Brief…

7-Eleven wants to provide more franchise opportunities to qualified men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The retailer has set a goal of recruiting 100 veterans and providing $2 million in discounts by the end of 2016. 7-Eleven’s program offers discounted franchise fees to retired or separated military veterans who have been honorably discharged from the service within the past five years. Sixteen New York State senators are urging the New York State Fire Prevention and Building Codes Council to repeal New York’s ban on gas pump nozzle hold-open clips. The New York Association of Convenience Stores (NYACS) supports the initiative for safety reasons. Jim Calvin, NYACS president, said without the availability of approved clips capable of shutting off automatically, some motorists instead stick their wallet, cell phone, coffee cup or other object in the nozzle handle while pumping fuel, inevitably overflowing their tank and causing spills that pose environmental and fire dangers. The newest member of the NYACS Associate Board is Frank Orloski, general sales manager for Core-Mark New England, covering upstate New York and all of New England. His family owned Orloski’s Convenience Stores, a 43-unit chain in northeastern Pennsylvania that was eventually sold in 2000 to Uni-Mart. He joined Core-Mark as a territory manager in Sacramento. He advanced to national food service program manager and, three years ago, to his current position.
