US. Foods opened its Albuquerque distribution center Dec. 1 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3700 Prince St. SE.

The 135,000-s.f. facility will enable the company, formerly called U.S. Foodservice Inc., to provide 40 percent more products to its more than 1,200 customers throughout New Mexico and El Paso. The center has 150 employees and is expected to add 20 percent more jobs over the next five years.

The $24 million expansion more than doubled the company’s existing cold storage capacity and increased the number of shipping and receiving docks. It leased warehouse space at 5600 2nd St. NW prior to building the new site.

The new 42-acre facility includes a number of sustainable design features, such as energy-efficient lighting, high-efficiency refrigeration systems and water conservation capabilities.

The company moved into the center in mid-October and it is fully operational. The project finished ahead of schedule.

With nearly $19 billion in annual revenue, US. Foods is the 10th largest private company in the U.S. and a leading food service distributor.
