Jonathan Mayes, SVP of public affairs, government relations, corporate social responsibility and philanthropy for Safeway Inc., was elected the 2011-12 California Grocers Association (CGA) Board of Directors chairman at the group’s annual meeting Dec. 2.

As chairman, Mayes will oversee CGA’s legislative, educational and industry-related programs. CGA is comprised of more than 400 retail companies operating more than 6,000 stores in California and Nevada. The chair serves for one year. Mayes succeeds immediate past chair Jim Amen, president and CEO of Super A Foods Inc. of Commerce, Calif.

“Jonathan’s considerable government relations knowledge coupled with his industry experience will be a tremendous asset as the association continues to expand its presence in the Capitol,” said CGA President and CEO Ronald K. Fong.

In addition to Mayes, the following individuals were elected to the 2011-12 CGA Board of Directors Executive Committee: first vice chair, Kevin Davis of Bristol Farms; second vice chair, John Quinn of Food 4 Less (Stockton)/Times Supermarkets; treasurer, Mary Kasper of Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market; secretary, Kevin Konkel of Raley’s; and past chair, Jim Amen of Super A Foods Inc.

This year’s chairman’s appointments to the executive committee include: Dave Jones of Kellogg Co., Mike Read of WinCo Foods Inc.; and Dora Wong of Coca-Cola Co. Wong also was elected for a second three-year term.

Directors elected for their first full three-year term include: John Eagan of Costco Wholesale; Rich Fry of Cardenas Markets; Ric Hamacher of Bimbo Bakeries, USA; Dave Huettl of Albertsons/Supervalu; Frank Jimenez of The Hershey Co.; John Kok of Procter & Gamble; Dan Meyer of Stater Bros. Markets; Phil Miller of C&S Wholesale Grocers; John Parke of E&J Gallo Winery; Harish Solanki of Big Saver Foods Inc.; and Mike Stamper of Nestle DSD.

George Frahm of Stater Bros. Markets, former chairman of the board, was nominated an honorary board member.

The CGA is a nonprofit, statewide trade association representing the food industry since 1898.
