Brad Wise will retire as president of Hannaford Supermarkets on June 30. Last week Hannaford named Michael Vail, current chief merchant and supply chain officer, to succeed Wise as president.

Vail, a 29-year veteran of the company, has served as a retail management trainee, store manager, district manager, category manager and director of deli merchandising. Prior to leading the supply chain for Delhaize America, Vail was president and COO of Sweetbay Supermarkets in Florida.

Wise is a 30-year veteran of Hannaford and Delhaize America. He began his career with the organization as a retail management trainee and worked as a store manager and regional VP of retail operations, among other roles. Prior to becoming Hannaford president in 2012, Wise served as SVP of human resources for Delhaize America, the parent company of Hannaford.

“Brad’s announcement of his retirement marks a transition in his distinguished and successful career with our company,” said Kevin Holt, CEO of Delhaize America. “During the next few months, Brad and Mike will work together to develop a smooth transition plan to ensure the continued forward momentum of our Hannaford strategic plan. I am grateful that we were able to tap into strong internal talent to ensure a seamless transition.”

Maine-based Hannaford has more than 180 stores in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.
