Seafood Expo Excellence Awards Announced

The 2015 Seafood Excellence Awards winners were announced earlier this week at Seafood Expo North America held in Boston. Yihe Corp. won the “Best New Retail” award for its Alaskan Jack’s, and High Liner Foods won the “Best New Food Service” award for its Pulled BBQ Salmon.

The Seafood Excellence Awards recognize product leaders in the North American seafood market. Finalists previously were selected through a screening of products participating in the Seafood Expo North America New Product Showcase.

In another competition, Daniel Notkin of Notkins Oyster Bar competed against 13 other contestants and was crowned winner of the ninth annual Oyster Shucking Competition. Notkin took the title of fastest shucker in the East over second place competitor Steve Boreen of Benjamin’s Raw Bar by only 34 seconds. Notkin won the $700 price for shucking a dozen oysters in an adjusted time of 1 minute, 37 seconds.

Deborah Pratt of the Virginia Marine Products Board, the 2014 oyster shucking winner, secured third place, while Keith Rose from Captain Wellfleet Fisheries and Gordon Weldon from Gordon’s Oysters came in fourth and fifth, respectively
