Northeast James Beard Foundation Awards Announced

Nominees for the 2015 James Beard Foundation Awards were announced earlier this week. The final awards will be announced May 4.

Best Chef in the Northeast nominees are: Karen Akunowicz of Myers & Chang of Boston; Barry Maiden of Hungry Mother of Cambridge and Cassie Piuma of Sarma of Somerville, Massachusetts; and Masa Miyake of Miyake and Andrew Taylor and Mike Wiley of Eventide Oyster Co., all of Portland, Maine.

Best Chef nominees in the five boroughs of New York City are: Marco Canora of Hearth; Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi of Carbone; Mark Ladner of Del Posto; Anita Lo of Annisa; Ignacio Mattos of Estelal; and Jonathan Waxman of Barbuto.

Best Chef nominees for the Mid-Atlantic region are Joe Cicala of Le Virtu, Rich Landau of Vedge and Greg Vernick of Vernick Food & Drink, all of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Spike Gjerde of Woodberry Kitchen and Cindy Wolf of Charleston, both of Baltimore, Maryland.

Other Northeast regional nominations are:

Best New Restaurant—Batard and Cosme, both of New York City;

Outstanding Baker—Joanne Chang, Flour Bakery & Cafe, Boston; Mark Furstenberg, Bread Furst, Washington, D.C.; Jim Lahey, Sullivan Street Bakery, New York City;

Outstanding Pastry Chef—Maura Kilpatrick, Oleana, Cambridge; Ghaya Oliveira, Daniel, New York City;

Outstanding Restaurant—Blue Hill, Stones Barns and Pocantico Hills, New York; Momofuku Noodle Bar and The Spotted Pig, both of New York City;

Outstanding Restaurateur—Stephen Starr, Starr Restaurants, Philadelphia; and

Outstanding Wine & Beer—Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Milton, Delaware.

Sevilla Restaurant of New York City is a nominee for America’s Classics, and Michael Nischan, president, CEO and co-founder of Wholesome Wave of Westport, Connecticut, was named Humanitarian of The Year.
