Stan Sorkin, president of the Connecticut Food Association (CFA), has been presented the National Grocers Association (NGA) Association Leadership Award for his dedication and longstanding service to the independent supermarket industry.

Sorkin’s career has spanned nearly 50 years, working in numerous senior level merchandising and management positions with Pathmark Stores before joining Alpha I Marketing, the marketing arm of Krasdale Foods, which is a leading grocery wholesaler in the New York area. Prior to working for Alpha I Marketing, he served four terms as chairman of the Food Industry Alliance of New York State and is a former chairman of the New Jersey Food Council.

In addition to leading the association’s advocacy efforts, Sorkin has worked to ensure his members receive important severe weather alerts and state-imposed restrictions on trucks during major weather events.

Through his leadership, CFA has seen continued growth and serves 240 member companies, the majority of which are family-owned supermarkets. Sorkin also a veteran, having served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

“A cornerstone of the food industry for nearly 50 years, I am pleased to recognize Stan for his outstanding leadership and tremendous commitment to the independent supermarket industry collectively in the state of Connecticut and nationwide,” said Peter J. Larkin, president and CEO of NGA. “Stan is held in the highest regard by his peers and colleagues in the food industry, his members and officials throughout the state of Connecticut as a tireless advocate for the independent industry, and therefore it gives me great pleasure to honor Stan with the 2015 NGA Association Leadership Award.”
