A&P Laying Off Thousands Of N.J. Workers On Thanksgiving Day, And More…

The A&P supermarket chain has filed layoff notices for 3,781 employees at 45 of its New Jersey stores. The layoffs are effective Nov. 26, Thanksgiving Day. Earlier, A&P filed 867 layoff notices in July with an effective date of Sept. 19 for eight New Jersey locations. In all, the number of employees affected in the state could exceed 4,600. To date, Stop & Shop, Acme Markets and Key Food plan to purchase 120 of the bankrupt A&P’s 296 stores with the balance of the stores now up for sale…

Levy Capital Partners LLC, a new merchant banking firm specializing in financings for growth companies, has completed financing for its client Norbest Inc., a grower, processor and marketer of turkeys. In the transaction, J.D. Heiskell Holdings LLC and Amerra Capital Management each acquired minority interests in a newly formed company named Norbest LLC and Moroni Feed Co. The remaining equity in the new company will continue to be owned by the 37 turkey growers who previously owned Moroni Feed Co…

Last year’s summer story of the turmoil of Market Basket is now a book. Daniel Korschun and Grant Welker are the authors of “We Are Market Basket, The story of the unlikely grassroots movement that saved a beloved business.” The book is published by publisher Amacom Books. Separately, a documentary film called “Food Fight” is nearing completion.
