Publix Super Markets said Oct. 3 that its Florida Publix pharmacies are offering testing and treatment for strep throat and flu for customers 13 years of age or older. Publix pharmacists now can evaluate patients, perform a diagnostic test and dispense treatment in one visit. For patients who test positive for flu, pharmacists also are able to dispense treatment for other household family members to prevent them from becoming sick from the flu.

“Our pharmacists’ ability to test and dispense medication for patients with strep throat and flu is another example of the premier service our customers have grown to expect from our pharmacies,” said Maria Brous, director of media and community relations for the Lakeland, Florida-based chain. “Publix cares about our customers and their health. Our pharmacists are able to provide a convenient and affordable service to customers who are under the weather. Providing medication on the spot truly makes this program full service.”

All Florida Publix pharmacies offer the tests for $30 each. The service is available to customers on a walk-up basis with no appointment necessary. Restrictions apply, and customers are encouraged to speak with their Publix pharmacist for more information.

If a customer tests positive for strep throat, the pharmacist will prescribe Penicillin VK, at no charge through the Publix Free Antibiotic program. If customers have an allergy to penicillin, an alternate prescription is available. Customers who test positive for the flu and meet requirements will be prescribed antiviral medication.

In addition, Publix pharmacies offer preventative care flu shots. For a detailed listing of Publix Pharmacy locations, visit publix.com/pharmacy.
