In 1960, after years of requests from customers who would make the long drive to the Burbank Gelson’s store that opened in 1951, brothers Eugene and Bernie Gelson opened their second store in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Encino. The new store changed the way the community shopped.
In addition to the very best produce, meats and other products, it upheld the brand’s high standards for service.
“As our longest continuously run Gelson’s location, the Encino store holds a special place in the hearts of our team. We are incredibly thankful to the residents of Encino and surrounding neighborhoods for 60 years of support, friendship and community,” said President and CEO Rob McDougall.
Now, 60 years later, Gelson’s Encino will be celebrating its anniversary on Friday, March 13, and Saturday, March 14. Gelson’s will mark the milestone with specials, including 30 percent off wine, beer and spirits; samples; Gelson’s grill; free groceries (one winner every hour) from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; live music and anniversary cake.
Gelson’s currently operates 27 full-service specialty grocery stores in Southern California. Each Gelson’s Market features the full amenities of a traditional supermarket, with the local flavor of a neighborhood market.
Gelson’s is particularly known for flavorful, hand-selected produce, the best and freshest cuts of meat and seafood, chef-prepared signature recipes and professionally designed floral arrangements.
