Buxton, Maine-based VitaminSea Seaweed is touting seaweed as a nutrient-dense source of many healthy nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, B vitamins, vitamin K, calcium, magnesium, potassium, copper and iron. The company says seaweed is also high in antioxidants which helps protect the body free radicals and from chronic disease and has been shown to have antiviral properties.
According to New Hope, starting as early as February, sales of “immunity-boosting vitamins, supplements and remedies were up 30 percent in natural retail stores.” VitaminSea says that since Covid-19 is a new virus, there are no specific preventative measures or treatments available, so people are turning to natural foods and supplements that are known or thought to boost the immune system, a complex set of organs, glands, tissues and more that protects the body from bacteria, viruses and toxins.
In 2019, the global seaweed market was valued at $8.8 billion and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.5 percent through 2025, partially due to its nutritive qualities.
VitaminSea Seaweed hand-harvests local sea vegetables in remote areas along the coast of Maine, far from boat traffic, discharge areas, marinas and anchorages. Everything it makes comes from live ocean plants, not from seaweed that has washed up on shore. VitaminSea Seaweed’s products are tested annually for radioactivity and heavy metals, and the results are within safe levels, according to the company.
VitaminSea Seaweed products include whole leaf seaweed, sea vegetable flakes that can be added to a number of meals for added flavor, texture and healing, packaged kelp snacks, for easy snacking, granular sea vegetables that can be used in recipes or in smoothies. It also offers bulk ordering and wholesale accounts.
VitaminSea Seaweed products are Certified USDA Organic, vegan and kosher. VitaminSea Seaweed also has the Green Business Seal of Approval and is a member of the Maine Seaweed Council.
