Farmer Bros. Will Wind Down Houston Manufacturing Operations

Northlake, Texas-based Farmer Bros. Co., a national coffee roaster, wholesaler and distributor of coffee, tea and culinary products, says it will implement the wind-down of manufacturing operations in Houston, Texas, in December, with the last day of production expected in late January 2021.

The Houston action is part of Farmer Bros.’ supply chain optimization strategy, which also includes significant improvements to the company’s Dallas-Fort Worth facility and a new West Coast distribution facility in Rialto, California. Farmer Brothers will continue to maintain a sales presence in the Houston area.

“The de-risking of our Houston operation is an unfortunate but necessary step in our long-term production and distribution strategy, which is aimed at better serving our customers, strengthening our competitive position both regionally and nationally and securing a strong future for Farmer Brothers,” said Deverl Maserang, CEO. “Decisions like these are extremely difficult for Farmer Brothers given our deep family values, and we are committed to supporting affected employees with severance and access to their benefits.”

For over a century, the Farmer Bros. Co. has built its business on providing extraordinary products at incomparable value to coffee-minded food service operators all across the country.

Farmer Bros. Co. history begins in 1912, when Roy E. Farmer thought it crucial that restaurants serve a quality cup of coffee, yet he couldn’t find one that did. Making and distributing coffee to restaurants and their patrons became his mission. Roy opened Farmer Brothers Coffee Co., headquartered in the back of his brother’s bicycle shop, and did just that.

Over the next 100 years, the Farmer Bros. Co. continued to evolve and flourish, growing branch by branch and customer by customer. Through a series of product line expansions and acquisitions, and a relentless commitment to continuously invest in customers, service and technology, the Farmer Bros. Co. has established itself as a national roaster, manufacturer, wholesaler and distributor of high-quality branded and private label coffees, teas, spices and culinary products to foodservice, convenience stores and grocery retailers.
