Aldi will open its long-awaited mixed-use development store at 1300 Fairmount Ave. in downtown Philadelphia on Thursday, Dec. 3. The discount retailer is expanding rapidly in the city, as this marks the 11th Philadelphia location and the eighth new store in the city since 2015.
This growth is propelled by a more than $5 billion investmentnationwide to open hundreds of new stores and remodel thousands of existing Aldi locations. Through its aggressive expansion plans, Aldi is on pace to become the third-largest U.S. grocery retailer by store count by the end of 2022.
Fairmount Avenue and North Broad Street is centrally located in downtown Philadelphia, and the Aldi store is situated on the ground floor of a new 14-story residential building. The new Aldi offers the largest sales floor space of all existing Philadelphia locations at more than 15,000 square feet and six aisles. The modern design also features large windows for increased natural lighting and locally inspired wall decals, including maps of historic downtown Philadelphia and some of the city’s famous monuments like the Liberty Bell.
“Opening new grocery stores in the heart of a bustling city doesn’t happen every day, and we’re proud to provide even more Philadelphia residents easy access to fresh groceries at unbeatable prices,” said Bob Grammer, Center Valley division VP for Aldi. “We’ve been serving Philadelphia customers for more than 25 years, and we continue to open new stores in a variety of locations – cities, suburbs and rural areas – because savvy shoppers want Aldi in their communities. We are excited to open our first Philadelphia store in a mixed-use development, and we look forward to future expansion in the city.”
Aldi stores have always been purposefully designed for simplicity and efficiency, and this year Aldi has seamlessly integrated several new safety features in all its stores.
The health and safety of customers and employees are the company’s top priorities, and Aldi optimizes its stores to provide the cleanest and safest shopping environment possible. The retailer also has remained focused on ensuring stores are stocked with the food and household essentials customers want and need, including healthy, convenientoptions and a robust selection of produce delivered fresh to stores daily. In addition, Aldi maximized refrigeration space in all new and remodeled stores to accommodate the recently expanded product selection, which includes a 40 percent increase in fresh food.
Aldi pioneered private-label goods and for the past four decades has remained focused on saving people money on the food and products they want most. For 10 years running, Aldi has held the title of Value Leader among U.S. grocery stores, according to the latest Market Force Information U.S. Grocery Competitive Study. The retailer consistently maintains low prices by working with partners to curate a selection of more than 90 percent exclusive brands, and Aldiguarantees its products are as good as or better than national brands. In fact, one in three Aldi -exclusive products is award-winning.
To provide customers choice and convenience in how they shop, ALDI continues to grow its e-commerce services. Grocery delivery is available in more than 10,000 zip codes, and earlier this year, Aldi accelerated the expansion of curbside pickup to meet shopper demand. By the end of 2020, nearly 700 stores will offer the service, including the newest downtown Philadelphia store. Shoppers can visit shop.aldi.us to learn more.
