“The challenges faced by many LGBTQ teens are ongoing and often heartbreaking. Food insecurity is one of these challenges,” said Felix Turner, manager of corporate affairs for Kroger’s Atlanta Division. “This donation furthers the mission of Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative, our bold social impact plan to create communities free of hunger and waste in the places we call home.”

According to Lost-n-Found Youth, more than 40 percent of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ and the disparity in the homeless youth population continues to grow.

A recent study cited on Youth.Gov found that runaway and homeless providers throughout the United States identified four top causes for homelessness among LGBTQ youth: (1) family rejection resulting from sexual orientation or gender identity; (2) physical, emotional or sexual abuse; (3) aging out of the foster-care system; and (4) financial and emotional neglect.

“Kroger strives to reflect the communities we serve and foster a culture that empowers everyone to be their true self, inspires collaboration and feeds the human spirit. Through our Framework for Action, Kroger is committed to standing together and mobilizing our people, passion, scale and resources to transform our culture and our communities,” Turner said.

Kroger’s Atlanta Division includes Georgia, Eastern Alabama and South Carolina.
