Tarrant Area Food Bank’s AgHub To Save, Redistribute Produce

Just over one year after breaking ground, the Tarrant Area Food Bank held a grand opening ceremony and ribbon cutting to welcome its new Sid W. Richardson Foundation Agricultural Hub (AgHub) at 205 North Vacek St. in Fort Worth, Texas.

Through agreements with farmers in the Tarrant Area and growers in the Rio Grande Valley and Arizona, the AgHub allows the food bank to accept donated fresh produce that will be sorted and distributed to more than 500 TAFB local partner agencies and other food banks across its 13-county service area.

The facility is adjacent to Tarrant Area Food Bank’s Morris Foundation distribution center and administrative offices on Cullen St. The Feb. 28 event featured remarks from several dignitaries, including TAFB President and CEO Julie Butner, Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker and Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller.

Tarrant Area Food Bank’s AgHub is an example of a public/private sector partnership, where the Sid W. Richardson Foundation made the lead private foundation gift and was joined by the city of Fort Worth, Tarrant County and the state agriculture department through the American Rescue Plan Act funds. Additional funding was contributed by the Amon G. Carter Foundation.

Feeding America, a nationwide network of food banks, believes the AgHub is an innovative hunger-ending solution to address food access and food insecurity, while supporting the U.S. agricultural economy.
