The Women Grocers of America (WGA) will host the first WGA 5K Fun Run/Walk presented by the Kellogg Co. on Feb. 11, 2013, on site at the Mirage Resort in Las Vegas, Nev., during the 2013 NGA Show, to be held Feb. 10-13.

The 5K will help raise much-needed funds to support WGA’s work to recruit and retain the next generation of successful individuals in the independent grocery and food industry with an emphasis on young women. Funds raised will be used toward supporting educational and professional opportunities for individuals through WGA’s Mary Macey Scholarship.

“The independent grocery community has truly embraced the commitment to developing the next generation of talent for our industry,” said Denise Beckman, president of WGA. “We are delighted to introduce a healthy activity in support of our mission and are deeply appreciative to the Kellogg Co. for their support.”

“As a company committed to good health and nutrition, Kellogg is honored to sponsor the WGA Inaugural 5K Fun Run/Walk,” said Dave Jones, VP of industry initiatives at Kellogg Co. “By sponsoring the event, we’re helping support WGA efforts to usher in the next generation of talent into the independent grocery industry.”

NGA is proud of its relationship with WGA and is excited to host the WGA 5K Fun Run/Walk Presented by Kellogg Co. at the NGA Show. We are all committed to the health of the grocery industry by ensuring a constant stream of talented young people who want to make a career in this fascinating and ever-changing business, particularly in the independent retail and wholesale sector,” said Peter Larkin, NGA president and CEO. “I would also add my thanks to the Kellogg Co. for their leadership in this area.”

The WGA’s 5K (3.1 miles) is a non-competitive, friendly fun run/walk event. Runners and walkers of all levels are welcome and will receive a race day T-shirt and goodie bag with all finishers receiving an award. Each attendee at the NGA Show can take part in the event by either signing up to run the course itself for $25 per runner, by sponsoring other runners, by making a donation, or as a race volunteer to help organize the event. Corporate sponsorship, partnership and in-kind donation opportunities are available for the 5K event.
