Renfro Foods’ Classic Dixieland Chow Chow Gets New Look

Before there was a Mrs. Renfro’s brand, there was Dixieland. In the company’s early days, George Renfro cooked Dixieland Syrup, Mild Chow Chow and Hot Chow Chow. Now, just in time for the New Year, the classic Dixieland brand chow chow condiment has an updated look.

The Dixieland lid and label, which have not been updated for decades, have been given a more contemporary look. The new silver metallic custom closure with multicolor lettering replaces the original white metal lid with single color type. The new label design draws upon the red, white and blue of the multicolor lid. Tricor, who supplied the closures, helped with the overall redesign; Silgan manufactured the closures; and Redstone, the labels.

“It was time for a change,” said Renfro Foods President Doug Renfro. “For this classic product we decided to have a unified look with the new lid and label for an item we’ve sold for more than half a century. We sell about 100,000 jars each year.”

Chow Chow, regionally associated with the South, is a pickled relish made from a combination of vegetables—including cabbage, sweet peppers and onions—that is served cold, most often as a condiment or relish.

The Dixieland brand can be found in stores such as Brookshire Brothers, Brookshire Grocery, Randall’s/Tom Thumb/Safeway and United, as well as and many others in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. A 12-oz. jar retails for about $2.29.
