Restaurant Performance Index Declines In August, And More…

The National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) declined in August. The RPI—a monthly composite index that tracks the health of and outlook for the U.S. restaurant industry—stood at 101.5 in August, down 1.2 percent from July and the lowest level in 11 months. Despite the decline, August represented the 30th consecutive month in which the RPI stood above 100, which signifies expansion in the index of key industry indicators…

The Rhode Island Department of Labor & Training recently granted Rhode Island Hospitality Association members permission to allow their employees to voluntarily waive their meal break periods and work through their breaks for pay. An employee can waive their right to a meal break as long as the waiver is voluntarily; approval is in writing and signed and dated by the employee and revocable at the employee’s written request. An employer cannot mandate as a term of employment that employees waive their meal break period…
