The Arkansas Grocers & Retail Merchants Association will hold its annual membership meeting and chairman luncheon from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Capital Hotel (Brooks Parlor Room) in Little Rock. Registration opens at 10:30 a.m.

Leon Jones Jr., director of the Arkansas Department of Labor, will be the guest speaker at the meeting, which also will provide an opportunity for attendees to meet the organization’s new president, Charlie Spakes.

Spakes, a native of Beebe, is a graduate of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock William H. Bowen School of Law and is a member of the Arkansas Bar.

Spakes previously worked for Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s office as legal advisor for the boards and commissions office. In this role, Spakes worked with the legislature and constituents to help the governor place qualified applicants on boards and commissions.

“My time with Gov. Hutchinson’s office is one that I will always cherish. The relationships and experiences I had while working for the governor will help me in leading the Arkansas Grocers & Retail Merchants Association,” Spakes said. “I am excited for this new opportunity to lead such a respected association that prides itself on top-quality service for its members.”

Before working in the governor’s office, Spakes was a policy researcher and law clerk for the Arkansas Health Care Association.

Meeting sponsorship opportunities also are available. For more information or to register, call 501-664-8680 or email [email protected].
