February is one of the hardest-hitting months for hungry families in Central Oregon, which is why Newport Avenue Market is again hosting Food for February. The fundraiser began Dec. 1.
The campaign held its first drive last year and the grocers’ customers donated $4,025, an amount Newport Avenue matched. Working with Unified Grocers, Newport Avenue was able to purchase $8,050 worth of food at wholesale prices (200 cases of soup, 50 cases of stew, 50 cases of tuna and 50 cases of cereal). The food donation marked one of the largest in the tri-county region.
This year, Newport Avenue Market is again asking its customers to donate any amount of cash to Food for February. The grocer will match 100 percent of the donations. This year’s food purchase will be given to Family Kitchen in Bend.
The campaign runs through Dec. 31.
