In one of its first foodservice purchases, C&S Wholesale Grocers, through its subsidiary Hawaiian Housewares Ltd., has signed an agreement to acquire the operations of Edsung Foodservice Co. of Honolulu, Hawaii.

The sale is expected to close in late April, at which point the Edsung business will be consolidated into the Hansen Distribution Group, a division of C&S. C&S views the purchase as providing operational efficiencies, increased purchasing power and product breadth as well as opportunities for continued growth.

Sungdai Choi founded Edsung in 1946. Servicing all of Hawaii, the company specializes in bakery and restaurant supplies.

“Edsung and the Choi family have maintained a very loyal customer base with their high-service business model and strong customer partnerships,” said C&S Chairman and CEO Rick Cohen. “We are committed to maintaining Edsung’s distinctive ‘Service with Aloha’ as we welcome the employees and customers into the C&S family.”

C&S of Keene, New Hampshire, is the largest wholesale grocery supply company in the U.S. It services customers of all sizes, supplying approximately 6,500 independent supermarkets, chain stores, military bases and institutions with more than 170,000 different products.
