Giant Food Presents $50K To Capital Area Food Bank

Giant Food of Landover, Maryland, this week presented the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) with a $50,000 donation, collected from in-store campaigns and fundraising during the summer’s 24th annual Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle in Washington, D.C.Giant Food logo

In 2016, Giant also committed to serving as the food bank’s inaugural Retailer for Wellness, a program established early in the year to help CAFB provide a balanced offering of food by sorting out leftover holiday candy, cakes and pies while increasing donations of lean proteins, whole grains and other foods that contribute to wellness.

CAFB is the largest organization in the Washington metro area working to solve hunger and its companion problems: chronic undernutrition, heart disease and obesity. By partnering with nearly 450 community organizations in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia, as well as delivering food directly into hard-to-reach areas, CAFB provides access to healthy, nutritious food to 540,000 people each year, distributing 44 million pounds of food—one-third of which is fresh fruits and vegetables.
