The NGA Show recently announced the results of a volunteer effort, in partnership with Matter and sponsored by Cub Foods, to provide healthy snacks and nutrition education to those in need in the local San Diego, California, area.
Immediately following the opening keynote session at the 2020 NGA Show, volunteers packed more than 1,000 Matterbox You Matter Snack Packs, which the San Diego Food Bank plans to distribute locally. Filled with nutritious snacks and nutrition education, a Matterbox snack pack acts as a “nutrition activator,” helping people take their first steps toward a healthier life. Also included with each Matterbox snack pack is a goal card and an inspirational You Matter note to the recipient. The notes were written by attendees of the NGA Show.
Each snack pack assembled at the NGA Show included items donated by Okanagan Specialty Fruits, Mondelez International Inc. and Wowbutter.
“It was rewarding for NGA members attending the show to participate in the Matterbox packing event, whether by assembling Matterboxes, writing out a You Matter note of encouragement, sponsoring or donating product or by cheering on those packing,” said National Grocers Association (NGA) President and CEO Greg Ferrara. “Independent grocers are known for jumping in wherever the opportunity presents itself to help those in need, so it was only appropriate to represent that at the 2020 NGA Show.”
“We were delighted to partner with Matter and Cub Foods to provide NGA Show attendees an opportunity to help those in need in the San Diego area. Matter is helping to fuel positive change and strengthen communities. We are gratified that this event will make a difference in the local community,” said Courtney Muller, chief corporate development and strategy officer with Clarion Events North America.
“We are very appreciative of the donation of the You Matter Snack Packs from the 2020 NGA Show and Matter,” said James A. Floros, president and CEO for the San Diego Food Bank. “This donation will allow us to reach even more people in the San Diego community with a nutritious snack pack and a message of hope.”
Quenton Marty, Matter president, said, “At Matter, as we strategically expand our impact around the nation, we look for innovative opportunities to bring partners together to make a difference in communities. This collaboration with NGA and Clarion Events North America provides a great illustration of how we can work collectively to combine purpose and industry, resulting in giving people a chance at a healthier life.”
The NGA Show has been the place where independent grocers gather for more than 30 years, connecting supermarket retailers and wholesalers, food manufacturers and service providers from around the world to share innovative solutions and best practices that support and strengthen the independent supermarket channel. The NGA Show is produced and managed by Clarion Events as part of the Food & Beverage Group in partnership with the NGA.
